What appeals to us the most about the AlpenGlow is the multiple colors and the party trick-like ability to create a light show from your phone. While it's possible to control the lantern from your phone, the phone-free button system is straightforward to control and easy, even for less technologically-inclined people. Its buttons and USB ports are more straightforward than other rechargeable camping lanterns we tested, which stopped taking a charge after 6 months of use. It has a protector for the USB charger to prevent water or sand from entering and blocking delicate pins in the micro-USB port.
We found the AlpenGlow to be the least finicky and most reliable of the rechargeable battery lanterns we tested.
